What happens during a room addition, step by step

Every stage of a real room addition we built in Southwest Michigan, from foundation forms to the finished room.

The short answer

A room addition goes foundation, floor framing, walls, roof, weather wrap, interior drywall, siding and finish work. On our most recent addition, foundation forms went up in late February and the finished room was ready in early June, about four months start to finish.

Foundation (late February)

Concrete forms were set and the foundation walls were poured behind the house, where an old covered porch had been.

Floor framing (mid March)

Floor joists were framed on the foundation and covered with subfloor sheathing.

Walls (late March)

Exterior walls were framed and sheathed, with openings for the windows.

Roof (April)

Roof trusses were set and the roof was decked, then the shell was wrapped in housewrap against the weather.

Drywall (May)

Inside, drywall was hung, taped and mudded.

Siding and finish (early June)

Dark blue siding went on outside, and the interior was painted and trimmed with windows on three walls.

Permits and planning

Additions in Michigan need permits and inspections. Plan time for design and approvals before the first shovel goes in the ground.

Can a room addition match my house?

Yes. Siding, trim and rooflines can be matched to the existing home.
